The EIE system, invented by Norwegian Dr. Nils Eie, required this special purpose boot with a toe plate that would snap into the binding. This eliminated the need for a clamp to hold the toe down, and saved weight. Bass Sports of Maine worked with the Norwegian manufacturer of the bindings to market the system in the USA.
